Readers of one of Europe’s most popular car magazines, Auto Bild Allrad, have named the two Skoda models the best all-wheel-drive vehicles.
In the category of 4×4 passenger cars below 40,000 euros, German customers have chosen the Octavia with AWD. The flagship Superb 4×4 led in the category above 40,000 euros, according to Škoda Auto’s website.
The Octavia already won the same Auto Bild’s nomination last year, as well as in 2014 and 2015. The Superb has been awarded for the eleventh time.
In the modern history of Skoda, mass production of models with a 4×4 drive started in 1999. It was the Octavia Combi 4×4 crossover-wagon. In 2002, a liftback got an AWD variant. In 2019, every ninth Octavia sold in Europe was 4×4.
As for the Superb with the 4×4 technology, it was introduced in 2008. The demand for the all-wheel drive flagship is high in Europe. Every fourth sold Superb was equipped with all-wheel drive last year.
Over 20 years, more than a million all-wheel-drive Skodas have rolled off the assembly line. Today, the Octavia, Superb, as well as the Kodiaq and Karoq crossovers have AWD modifications.
Interestingly, the Czech auto company developed the first four-wheel drive prototypes in the late 30ies of the last century.
